History of the Elba Fire Tower

Built in 1933, the Elba fire tower was used regularly to detect fires and has been a familiar sight to locals in this rural town since then. Today it is raising awareness about its importance as an historical landmark while also being enjoyed by those who visit with their families or friends on all sorts of adventures such as climbing up inside!

How Many Steps is the Elba Fire Tower?

Just to get to the base of the Elba Fire Tower, you must hike up 630+ wooden steps along the side of the bluff. These steps weave through the wooded bluff side, with a few areas to stop & catch your breath along the way – you will certainly get your workout in & heart rate going for the day!

How Tall is the Elba Tower?

From the base of the Elba Fire Tower to the top platform, the tower sits approximately 100 feet high. Although 100 feet doesn’t seem tall, the fact that this tower sits on top of an already tall bluff – you will feel like you are even higher!

Is the Elba Fire Tower Open?

Yes it is open, sometimes the top platform may be closed for safety reasons, but I’ve only experienced that happening once. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, it is open during daylight hours, April through October.

Can You Climb The Elba Fire Tower?

Absolutely, the Elba Fire Tower is quite the climb! The narrow wooden steps are exhilarating yet frightening at the same time. Be sure to hold on tight to the railing as you make your way to the top!

Other Information:

  • There is a parking lot at the trailhead
  • No bathrooms
  • Bring a water bottle
  • Dogs are allowed
  • Children should not climb the tower by themselves
  • Be cautious after recent rainfall. Due to the tree cover the steps don’t always dry well & may become slippery.
  • Whitewater State Park is a 5 minute drive from the Elba tower
  • Carley State Park is a 15 minute drive from the Elba tower
  • There is only 1 gas station in the town of Elba
