Door Country is truly one of Wisconsin’s best vacation destination – some even call it the “cape cod” of the Midwest as its known for its laid back atmosphere, coastal vibes, and the wonderful nature that surrounds the peninsula.

4 Can’t Miss Lighthouses In Door County

Lighthouse lovers will be excited to hear that Door County has many lighthouses still in use today and some no longer functioning but preserved for historical purposes. All of these structures show the unique nature found among all buildings dedicated with preserving a gateway to the past!

1. Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Pierhead Lighthouse

The lighthouse at the pierhead of Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal is an impressive red structure that’s easy to spot against its backdrop. Built in 1882, this structure has withstood both time and Mother Nature to remain one-of-a kind example for other structures around that time.

Visitors must park in the lot near the fully operational U.S. Coast Guard station’s gate, follow the driveway, and arrows leading to the lighthouse walkway. It is free to view this lighthouse.

2. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse

Located in Peninsula State Park, atop a bluffs 76 feet high, the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse has been guiding ships through Green Bay’s glimmering waters for decades. In 1868 the keepers brought solace to those withstanding harsh storms or dark nights at on the waters with their lamp lit.

Today, the preservation of this retired lighthouse allows visitors step inside the walls where you can learn all about what made these keepers choose life as lighthouse tenants. Wisconsin State Parks pass is required to enter the park and a fee to tour the lighthouse.

3. Cana Island Lighthouse

You can’t come to Door County without visiting this iconic and popular lighthouse. This historic building was established back in 1869 when it became operational with automated technology which was installed during World War II (1944).

The Door County Maritime Museum operates Cana Island to preserve it’s history while providing educational opportunities. Notably, the causeway that separates Cana Island from Bailey’s Harbor can be walked across, however the Museum offers a wagon ride to get you across more easily. There is a fee to explore the island.

4. Baileys Harbor Range Lights

For over 100 years, the Baileys Harbor Range Lights guided boats to safety. They were automated after 1923 and replaced with a directional light on top of 31 foot tower when they were no longer needed. The lights were eventually restored and moved to the Ridges Sanctuary where they can be seen today.

The Ridges Sanctuary is a unique place because of its natural landscape. The 30 ridges and swales that make up the area were formed by Lake Michigan’s moving over 1,400 years ago! It is home to many wonderful trails, almost 500 different plant species, boardwalks, and more.
